Accommodation employment rebounded in August
Accelerating
What changed
Accommodation employment increased by about 8,600 jobs in August to roughly 1.93 million. The gain came in a month when leisure and hospitality employment also rose more broadly.
One month is not a trend by itself, but the increase fits with recent positive year-over-year hotel operating results.
Why it matters
Hotels often have to staff before the guest arrives, which makes a bad forecast expensive. The staffing formula is also different by department. Housekeeping, front desk, food and beverage, engineering and sales do not all scale one-for-one with occupancy.
What it means for your business
Track labor hours per occupied room by department and compare forecast occupancy with actual. Housekeeping schedules should follow departures and stayovers. Food and beverage should follow covers and event counts. Front-desk coverage should follow arrival and departure peaks.
If overtime is high, find out whether the cause is a vacancy, a schedule problem or a short burst of demand before adding a permanent position.
What to watch
Watch fall booking pace, overtime and labor hours per occupied room. More staff makes sense when it supports profitable occupied-room growth.
NewsTrend status describes the development’s observed direction, not a forecast. Business implications are general operating ideas; actual results depend on your concept, market and economics.
